The Cruising Club of America – Fall Meeting

October 16-18, 2014 Toronto

The Great Lakes Station is pleased to welcome Cruising Club of America members to Toronto for the 2014 Fall Meeting.

Situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is home to more than 2.8 million people and is the cultural, entertainment and financial capital of Canada.

Meetings will be held at the city station of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. The RCYC city station is conveniently located in mid-town Toronto, steps from shopping, museums, galleries, theaters and restaurants. (www.seetorontonow.ca)

Social activities include an opening reception at Massey College (www.masseycollege.ca), on the beautiful downtown campus of the University of Toronto and an excursion across Toronto Harbour to the Island facility of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. (www.rcyc.ca)

The RCYC island facilities and clubhouse provide a wonderful vista of the Toronto skyline and is truly one of the most memorable locations of any yacht club you will visit.

The Intercontinental is located on Bloor Street, a short walk from both the opening reception at Massey College and the meeting venue at the RCYC city station.

Opening Cocktail Reception is to be held at Massey College, 1700 to 1900. Massey College is located on the campus of the University of Toronto at 4 Devonshire Place, a short walk from the Intercontinental Hotel. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available.

Massey College is a graduate students residential community which provides a unique, congenial and intellectual environment for graduate students of distinguished ability in all disciplines. The college was designed by architect Ron Thom and opened in 1962.

Friday October 17, 2014

CCA Fall meetings will be held at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club City Station at 141 St George Street.

The Royal Canadian Yacht Club is a sailing club with a tradition dating back to 1852. The City Station provides modern facilities for squash, badminton, aquatics and fitness as well as dining and meetings. Jamie Keating is the Commodore and HRH Prince Philip is the Royal Patron. The Toronto Island facility is home to the summer clubhouse and the fleet of racing and cruising boats.

Continental breakfast will be available prior to the morning meetings.

Lunch will be available at a charge of $30/ per person with cash bar.

The RCYC City Station will also host a tasty ‘Canadiana’ dinner on Friday evening, orchestrated by chef Jonathan Goodyear. Chef Goodyear was recently runner up on a nationally televised cooking competition.

Reception at 18.30 and dinner at 19.30

$120 per person including cocktails and wine with dinner.

Excursion to the Toronto Islands for a tour of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club summer facilities and a buffet lunch.

Participants to meet at the RCYC City Station, 141 St George Street, at 09.45, where a bus will take us to the RCYC dock at Toronto Harbor. Here we will board a launch for the 10 minute journey to the RCYC islands.

A light lunch will be served at the island clubhouse. The bus will return to 141 St George Street at 15.00.

Charge for RCYC Island excursion:

– Bus $20 per person

– Launch and lunch $40 per person, cash bar

In addition to the previously announced activities, a private tour of The Thomson Collection of Ship Models at The Art Gallery of Ontario has been arranged for Saturday October 18.

The Thomson Collection of Ship Models spans some 350 years and contains examples of exquisite workmanship, showing rare late 17th and 18th century British dockyard models made to scale for the Royal Navy and wealthy individuals. There are also a large number of models made by some of the the 120,000 prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars. Ship models in the Thomson Collection are exhibited in cases designed by Frank Gehry that resemble waves moving across the sea. Sherry Phillips, Conservator at the AGO, will kindly share with us her knowledge of this world renowned exhibit.

The evening is free to explore the many dining and entertainment choices available in Toronto.
