“Lucky to be Alive” is a TV documentary produced by Tell Tale Productions in association with the national broadcaster which uncovers ocean survival stories of people who narrowly escaped death at sea and the Coast Guard rescuers who risk their own safety to save their lives.

Those featured on the show with a local connection include Alan Creaser, Derek Hatfied and Watson Knickle, each of whom experienced a brush with death while at sea.

Mr. Creaser, who grew up in Lunenburg and spent his summers working on fishing trawlers as a teenager, was a crew member on the ill-fated vessel Margaret Jane which was involved in a collision with another ship that claimed four of his crewmates.

Mr. Hatfield holds the distinction of being the first Canadian in history to race a sailboat single handed around the world twice. During one of those races his vessel was dis-masted off the coast of South America during a violent storm.

Mr. Knickle was 16 years old when the 60-foot long liner “Robert Brian” that he was crewing aboard went down off the coast of Cape Breton. He survived for nearly eight hours in freezing weather and has finally broken 40 years of silence to share the story of his ordeal for the show.

“Lucky to be Alive” was written and directed by award-winning Halifax filmmaker John Rosborough and created and produced by Edward Peill from Tell Tale Productions.

“Everyone knows the stormy Atlantic Ocean is a dangerous place to be and the people who live in fishing communities feel the effects of ocean disaster first-hand,” Mr. Rosborough says. “But once in a while – and against the odds – there are those that escape the ocean’s peril and these survivors have amazing stories to share.”

Following the world premiere of the show on television, it can be watched on the CBC TV website at http://www.cbc.ca/landandsea.
